A woman who's body was found in a shallow grave last month died from a blow to the head and a cut to her throat.

The body of Vickie Lewis was found in the Chapel Ridge subdivision in Onslow County.

Detectives have charged 54 year old Albert Bedford with Lewis' murder.

Today the sheriff's office says the preliminary cause of death for Lewis has been listed as blunt force trauma to the head and a laceration to the throat.

Previous Story

People in one Onslow County subdivision are in shock to find out a woman's body was buried in a neighbor's backyard.

They only learned of it after reporters today discovered where Vickie Lewis' remains were found over the weekend.

The sheriffs department will only say the 43-year-old woman's body was found on the property of a relative of Albert Bedford, her suspected killer. The refused to release an exact location of where her body was found.

Today WITN News went to the Chapel Ridge subdivision near the airport where a family member of Bedford lives.

Neighbors say several deputy cars were parked at that relative's home on Saturday and Sunday, even asking them if they noticed any activity in the woods near Thanksgiving. .

WITN found the neighborhood after searching public records and speaking with the victim's family.

Tuesday's Update

The family of a woman who's body was found in a shallow grave over the weekend speaks out to WITN News.

The sister of Vickie Lewis says "by the grace of God we are holding up, but it still gets us down.".

Lewis' body was found Saturday in a shallow grave on property owned by a relative of murder suspect Albert Bedford.

The woman's sister, Audrey Green, says they knew the two had a relationship, and said they didn't care for Bedford. Green says Beford is an ex-Chicago police officer and both her sister and the suspect worked together at Camp Lejeune.

Green tells WITN News that once the family figured out Lewis was missing, her husband filed a missing persons report and then went searching for her car. Green says the husband found the murder victim's car was found in the parking lot of Onslow Memorial Hospital.

"We will forgive Mr. Bedford, but we want him to pay for what he did," says Green.

Victim Obtained Warrant

Lewis was last seen November 24th and her family reported her missing later that week.

It turns out Lewis had filed misdemeanor larceny and communicating threats charges against Bedford back on November 8th. The warrant says Bedford pulled a knife on Lewis and said "bitch I have something for you".

Today Sheriff Ed Brown says Bedford and Lewis had an extremely close relationship while both were married and had their own families. Brown says even though the murder victim took out the warrant, he says their relationship continued.

Bedford remains in the Onslow County jail without bond.

Albert Bedford went before a district court judge this morning in Jacksonville.

Sheriff investigators say they found the body of Vickie Lewis on Saturday in a shallow grave. The district attorney says the remains were found at a relative's house and says the woman's injuries were "brutal".

Because of the amount of decomposition, Lewis' body is being sent to Chapel Hill for an autopsy.

Bedford's next day in court is December 31st.

Vicki Lewis was a dear friend to me and my family. My heart goes out to Mr. Lewis and the family. God heals all wounds. Rest assure that Bedford will pay for his crime in this life, and in the next. May God bless Vicki's family, and keep them strong. Now and forever. I miss you all and will keep you in my prayers.

I know it is most painful for Ms. Lewis' family and friends...may they have the strength and prayers needed during this most tragic time. The warrant is a public record and anyone can see it in the Onslow County Clerk's Office. I am sure WITN is not trying to cause any more grief to Ms. Lewis' family and friends - WITN is just accurately reporting to their viewers the complaint on the warrant.

If that was my sister, the world wouldnt be big enough for Mr. Bedford and myself. It would be very hard knowing he did this to a family member and is still walking around breathing.

Come on WITN7... Can we watch our language... Her family could read this... I can't believe you all actually went that far posting up his exact words that said to her... Okay she had a warrant on him if you wanted to go into details you should have just said he pulled a knife on her... all the other was uncalled for!!!!

A warrant is just a piece of paper & whether or not a judge ordered them to stay away from and not talk with each other does not matter. If a person intends to injure and/or kill another person, a piece of paper and/or a judge's order will not stop them.

How can you blame the judge this time. The article says their relationship continued after she took out the warrant. I don't think the judge is allowed to dictate what relationships we keep, that sounds like a personal decision.
