Horse Killed; Marines Being Questioned

Marines are being questioned in the death of a seven year old horse in Onslow County.

Owner Elizabeth Kachmor tells WITN News that "Alderbaran" began acting sick on November 9th. She took horse to the NC State Veterinarian Hospital where he died this past Friday.

X-rays showed a .22 caliber bullet lodged in the horse's liver. Kachmor believes three Marines who live on property near the horse may be responsible for his death.

A spokesman for the 2nd Marine Division says a group of Marines are currently being questioned about the incident. The Onslow County Sheriff's Department is also investigating what happened.

Ya'll be eating your words if you find out it wasn't marines but a punk kid playing with his new toy. Come on, a marine is not going to use a 22 to hunt with, I don't think anyone would except a teenager shooting squirels.

Just because the neighbors are Marines is no reason to loathe the military. If these guys had never joined the Marine Corps they could have done the same thing!!!!!!! Everyone likes to point out the wrong doings of the military these days. Dont get me wrong...this story does upset me, being a horselover, but its not the "military's" fault. Its the individuals resposible for this. They were not instructed by the military to do this, they did it on their own.

Not all the facts are being reported. I understand you wanting to defend the military but you do not know the rest of the story since it has not been released. There is a very good reason 2nd Marine Division is involved. Bullets do not lie. I am disgusted by the individuals no matter their label and heartbroken for Elizabeth. I hope these guys pay dearly!

I agree with drillsgtc, This is not something that has anything to do with the neighbors in question being marines. Nor does the article state that the shooting was intentional. There are instances of people target shooting in rural areas. They shouldn't be doing it anywhere that is at all populated, but it happens. It could be a matter of poor judgement and not intentional harm. People who would like to practice shooting guns should keep to shooting ranges, but they don't always do that. I know of civilians who go out shooting in places that they probably should not. That being said, if it was intentional, throw the book at them.

In this article, you say Marines are be questioned about the death of a horse. But your article also says that these individuals are neighbors. The fact that the neighbors are Marines has nothing to do with the Marine Corps. You might have been the neighbor, so they would say WITN being question about death of horse. It appears that the neighbors might need to answer some questions about the horse being shot, but not the Marine Corps. This article makes it sound like these individuals shot the horse on purpose, and that may not be the fact. In comments received thus far, one says that they loathe the military, and the other say how can people be so mean. The fact that these men are members of the Marine Corps, does not mean that the Marines shot the horse. With out the military the anonymous individual who said that they loathe the military might find themself living in a country with no freedom for it people. By the way, I'm retired from the United State Army. GOD BLESS AMERICA!
