2 More Pitt County "Hole-In-The Wall" Crimes Under Investigation

Greenville Police are investigating a break-in and an attempted break-in which involved the same method as several recent crimes in Pitt County over the past couple of years: breaking through a roof or wall.

Police say workers at O'Reilly's Auto Parts on South Memorial Drive in Greenville discovered a hole in the back of the business last Monday morning. Police say the thieves tried to break into the safe. No word if any money was taken, but they did run off with three carburetors valued at $600. The next day, Pitt County authorities were called to Joe's Country Mart on Highway 33. This is the third time someone has either broken in or tried to get in through the roof at the store. Deputies say the burglar actually tripped the alarm and they arrived in minutes, but the person was gone when deputies arrived.

"It's very frustrating, especially when we keep seeing the unique pattern he has. It's very easy to identify them. We call them all the hole-in-the-wall," said Sheriff Neil Elks.

The convenience store owners says they've equipped the whole building with cameras. In this attempted robbery, all police could see on surveillance video was the person's arm as they tried to turn off the alarm. Sgt. Joe Friday with Greenville Police says the O'Reilly's store hole-in-the-wall robbery seems to be related to the dozen others in and around Pitt County.
