Kitchen Shortcuts: Broth to the Rescue

Stock your pantry with canned broth and get ready to stir things up in the kitchen in no time.

Having containers of broth on hand can go a long way to making us look good in the kitchen. There are loads of brands and varieties of broth available: chicken, beef, veggie, in all different types from ready-to-serve (already diluted) to condensed (which means we should add water to it). Either is sure a lot easier than making a stock from scratch. I mean, who wants to spend time chopping veggies and boning meat and straining everything?

And since broth is similar to stock in how we can use it, broth is the perfect shortcut alternative. Try using it in place of water when cooking everyday foods like rice, potatoes and pasta. Broth will add flavor without adding fat. That’s why it’s also used as the base for so many of our sauces, gravies and dressings. It adds tasty excitement to all of them!

When roasting meats, especially poultry, basting with broth will add taste along with keeping the meat moist. It’s the obvious choice for homemade soups like chicken soup, but did you know that rave-getting onion soups get their richness from beef broth? And that’s just the start - broths give plain frozen veggies a ‘wow factor.’ A couple minutes in the micro with a little broth, and wait 'til you taste the difference!
