Salad Trends
Air Date: 10/15/2007

It seems like "everything old is new again!" Iceberg lettuce is making a big comeback at restaurants! A simple wedge of it topped with a dollop of creamy dressing is all the rage! At our markets, we're finding ready-to-eat packaged salads with crispy iceberg lettuce and colorful nutritious carrots and red cabbage!

Why the new trend? Because getting back to basics makes sense! We can introduce our kids to a life-long love of salads by tempting them with what most of them like...the most crunch! And because these simpler garden varieties stand up to any dressing, they fit our fancier taste buds, too! And they're so easy to prepare. Unseal the bag, take out what you need, seal it up and they're your passport to mealtime...in a snap!

We can toss together a festive south-of-the-border taco salad with some salsa, browned ground beef, iceberg lettuce and shredded Cheddar cheese. It's easy!

Iceberg is perfect in an Italian antipasto with deli meats and cheeses, and bottled marinated veggies.

How about making a salad pizza? Top a store-bought pizza shell with chopped garlic and shredded cheese then bake and top it with a crispy cool garden salad just before serving.

What about serving salad in an ice cream dish? Imagine the reaction you'll get if you let the gang personalize it with toppings like raisins, dried cranberries and nuts, and finish it off with a cherry tomato and a drizzle of dressing!
