A Marine Corps Community in the east will become the largest solar thermal powered residential community in the U.S.

The solar project at Atlantic Marine Corps Communities at Camp Lejeune will produce 75 percent of the energy demand for 900 new and existing homes on base.

The initiative will replace traditional fossil fuel sources preventing the release of 1035 carbon dioxide emissions each year.

This is the equivalent according to officials of taking 255 cars off the road, or planting 10 acres of trees.

Installation of all systems began in November 2009 and all are expected to be operational in December.
