A Texas sheriff's official says the national death toll from Hurricane Ike has hit 70 after two bodies were found near where the storm came ashore.

A search team made the discovery Saturday on an island off the devastated resort area of Bolivar Peninsula.

The bodies were taken to the Galveston County medical examiner's office. Sheriff's Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo (too-leh-MAHN'-doe) says he has no other information about the victims.

Ike forced more than a million people to flee the Texas coast before it hit Sept. 13. It caused flooding and deaths as far away as Pennsylvania.

All 33 people who stayed behind in Galveston, Texas died. One lady was reported as saying that Galveston was where she was born and that was where she was going to die. She probably did not expect this to be her time to go though. Another lady who decided to stay was reported as later calling a friend stating, "I really messed up this time." She also was later found dead. Those who remained on the Galveston island either died from drowning, carbon monoxide poisoning, or other factors related to the storm. They ranged in age from 7 to senior citizens. This is such a sad occurrence, but serves as an example to everyone to never take life for granted and to obey the government's orders when our lands are faced with possible destruction.

How come this hurricane has not had as coverage "aftermath" coverage as Katrina? Editors Note: We are still covering the clean up and eventual rebuilding as a result of Hurricane Ike. That being said, at least 1,836 died as a result of Hurricane Katrina and the flooding after the storm.
