Highway 12 Reopens To Traffic Save Email Print

The D.O.T. has cleared tons of sand off Highway 12, just north of Rodanthe, and the only route between Buxton and Nags Head is open again to traffic.

This afternoon the trip north of Rodanthe was a soggy one for motorists as the highway still had some water on it.

The beach road was shut down yesterday afternoon as the nor'easter flooded the highway with water and sand.

The reopening may be short lived. Dare County says the road may be closed again during periods of high tide over the next 36 to 48 hours.

Previous Story

The nor'easter is causing traffic problems on the Outer Banks and in New Bern.

Highway 12 remains closed at Rodanthe. Dare County says ocean over-wash and sand on the highway has shut the road to all vehicular traffic. The road is not expected to reopen until Friday morning.

The DOT is stopping all traffic at the north end of the Bonner Bridge and just north of Rodanthe on the south end.

In Craven County, the DOT says Oaks Road in New Bern also closed due to high water.

I work in Rodanthe and I know how quickly the road can flood. Hopefully everything will pass by and HWY 12 will get the all clear. There's nothing worse than being on that road with water everywhere...

A storm centered off the Carolina coast is moving westward...creating very windy conditions along the beaches. Moderate flooding is expected in the southern portion of Pamlico sound including the Neuse River. A Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect for Carteret...Pamlico..and Craven counties where NNE winds of 30-40 will push water levels to 2-4 feet above normal. THIS IS WHY SCHOOL IS CLOSED BECAUSE THERE IS A POSSIBLITY OF FLOODING

my children attend school in manteo and there is no way in the world anyone could go through the mess with out messing up your vehicle and it is for the safety of the staff and the students have you rode down road in carteret county. prob not and just because it is not covered with water does not mean that it is not dangerous. you just mad because your kids have been home all day long and you had to entertain them. big deal if school was out it is better then someone getting hurt or worse. you never know when the water will come up with these storms and i would rather my kids be home then at school and the water come up and i am not able to get to them

Apparently you don't comprehend what you read. I have been on Hwy 12 many times. The point I was making is what does it have to do with closing schools in Carteret County? We are a long way from Hwy 12 and 40 miles from New Bern. You see, the powers that be closed the schools in Carteret County today because the wind is blowing and it is raining. We probably have a road or two flooded around here as well. A very normal everyday event on the the coast of the United States. By the same token I don't think it would be necessary to close the schools in Manteo or Nags Head because Hwy 12 is flooded. It is stupid. If there is a portion of road that is impassible, then those who can't make it don't go. You don't close down a county or state because the wind is blowing and it is raining and a road here and there has some flooding. Ridiculous insane reactionary decisions made by the 'very afraid', of what I have no idea.

Apparently you have never been on highway 12 in Dare County- there is only one way in and the same way out- if the road floods many people are cut off from the mainland. The last time I checked New Bern has many alternate routes.
