A bus full of civil rights activists, foundation leaders and scholars pulled into Washington Thursday morning to kick off the first leg of a state-wide tour focusing on poverty.

It's called the "Truth and Hope Tour of Poverty in North Carolina". Members of the state NAACP and other organizations are traveling to six counties in the east hit hardest by poverty.

The first stop was in Beaufort County at the Metropolitan AME Zion Church in Washington. Leaders gathered to listen to community members facing poverty, and are hopeful putting a face on the problem will bring about change.

The bus also stopped in Washington and Pasquotank counties and will continue on to Hertford, Halifax and Edgecombe counties Friday.

The problem comes down to making choices. You make good ones and bad ones. If you have a stable family raising you they will teach you how to make good choices. If there is no role model in the home you are doomed! No matter how much money is thrown at this problem it still comes down to teaching your children values and making good choices.

As long as up to eighty percent of minority children are born out of wedlock and less than sixty percent of those children graduate from high school in many areas, poverty will continue to be a fact of life for these citizens. I suspect the touring group will end up blaming "white suppression" for the lack of opportunities and the root cause of these living conditions instead of facing reality. The majority of these problems are caused by lifestyle choices made by women who have no other ambition but to live off the government dole and breed more children in order to improve their benefits. It is a lifestyle that repeats itself generation after generation and if you want to blame anyone for this problem, blame the government for giving people a free ride at the expense of taxpayers. Citizens, black or white, who game the system are not vitims. Their situations are self-imposed.
