Grandmother Killed In Craven County Crash, Grandson Survives

By  |

The Craven County Highway Patrol says a woman was killed Friday night as she was driving on Highway 70 with her 4 year old grandson in the vehicle.

Troopers say 63-year-old Melba Lipford was killed when her gray Mercury Mountaineer was rear ended by a GMC SUV about 8:35 p.m. Friday on Highway 70 between the Clarks Road and Tuscarora Rhems exits. The vehicles were headed west on Highway 70. Troopers say Lipford's grandson was in a child seat and survived the crash with no injuries, even though the vehicle was pushed off the road into the woods.

Troopers say the three people in the GMC SUV had no major injuries. The crash is still under investigation and no one has been charged yet.
