Volunteers Build Playground In Washington In Beaufort County

More than 200 volunteers from the Washington Housing Authority, the Oakcrest Resident Organization, the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, organizers from KaBOOM! and residents of the Washington community will join forces on Saturday, December 14, to build a new playground at the Oakcrest Complex.

The new playground's design is based on drawings created by children who participated in a Design Day event in October. Today's kids spend less time playing outside than any previous generation in part because only 1-in-5 children live within walking distance of a park or playground.

This play deficit is having profound consequences for kids physically, emotionally and cognitively. Children need a place to play every day in order to be active and healthy, something KaBOOM! has been committed to since 1996.

The new playground will provide more than 200 children with a safe place to play. Currently, the children at the Oakcrest Complex do not have a playground that meets the needs of the community. We would like you to be a part of building a new alternative place to play at the Oakcrest Complex.

This will be the sixth build in a series of playground construction and mapping projects in Beaufort, Halifax and McDowell counties supported by a $700,000 grant from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust. The partnership is part of Healthy Places NC, a long-term Trust initiative to improve the health of 10 to 15 low-income, rural North Carolina counties over the next decade. The first Beaufort County playground was erected in Enfield at Myers Park on Saturday, November 23, with the help of hundreds of local volunteers.

The project is one of more than 150 playground builds KaBOOM! will lead across the country in 2013 in an effort to fulfill its vision of a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America.
