Officials overseeing a $10 million fund set up to compensate victims of North Carolina's forced sterilization program say about 180 people have qualified so far to receive payments.

The Office for Justice of Sterilization Victims received 780 claim forms seeking compensation. Of those, 565 claims were sent to the state Industrial Commission for an initial determination of whether the individual qualifies. About 200 additional people have been asked for more information or documentation.

The state eugenics board is estimated to have forcibly sterilized more than 7,600 men, women and children between 1929 through 1974.

Living victims whose claims are verified will share equally from the $10 million fund set up by state lawmakers last year. The first checks are set to go out at the end of October.
