Veteran Asheville Police Officer Files Complaint

Two veterans with the Asheville Police Department have filed formal complaints with a federal agency voicing concerns about leadership.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports Lt. Mark Byrd filed a formal complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission through his attorney. Byrd issued a statement at his attorney's office Friday but took no questions.

Former Greenville Police Chief William Anderson is the chief there now.

Attorney John C. Hunter said he's also representing another veteran policeman who has filed charges of discrimination against the department.

The allegations follow a complaint by a police lieutenant who claimed he was pressured to submit false and misleading information regarding a March 9 car accident involving Police Chief William Anderson's son.

City management ruled Thursday that the lieutenant was not coerced, and city council voiced its support for the chief.
