A veterinary technician is accused of stealing drugs from her employer.
Jennifer Barnes of Beaufort is charged with two counts of embezzlement of controlled substance by employee and two counts of trafficking opium or heroin.
Carteret County deputies say Barnes worked for a grant program funded through the Brandt Foundation and was responsible for the inventory control of medications.
Detectives say Barnes was arrested after they received information about the mobile veterinary services unit, Spay to Save, missing hydromorphine vials used to treat animals.
The 39-year-old woman was released on a $25,000 bond.
