An outreach program that provides food and other essentials to people in need says it is struggling to help a Craven County community after more than 150 people were recently laid off from their jobs in the area.
Vanceboro Christian Outreach is a non profit organization that serves more than 1,100 people. The organization only serves those in need in the Vanceboro community within 8 -10 miles from Main Street in Vanceboro.
The number of people needing help from the organization has increased in the last two months due to recent layoffs like the ones at the Hatteras yachts plant in New Bern.
"Those that are living in our district that come in and have been laid off, they fill out the application and complete the application and give me permission on anything I need to verify," said
outreach director Dottie Baker.
The outreach also has an area with donated clothing and household items. You can donate at their building off Main Street in Vanceboro.
