Utility Worker Killed While Working Alongside Highway 17 Near Wilmington

A utility worker is dead after authorities say he and another worker were hit by a car on Highway 17 and Sloop Point Road in Hampstead, nearly 17 miles from Wilmington.

The Highway Patrol says 72-year-old Floyd Osborne of Wilmington is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and a lane violation.

The victim was from Burlington and was installing fiber optics in the Pender County town.

The other worker is OK.

Police said the two had vests on and cones set up in their work area for visibility.
