Peanut Crowned The World's Ugliest Dog

An abused dog that was first featured on WITN last month has been crowned the "World's Ugliest Dog."

Online voting is over, and a three-judge panel determined the winner at Sonoma-Marin Fair in California.

Holly Chandler adopted "Peanut" after he was rescued last July in Washington. The dog was set on fire as a puppy, being severely burned by his previous owners. Those owners were never found and "Peanut" spent nine months recovering.

Chandler began raising money for "Peanut" to compete in the California contest, saying she wanted to bring attention to animal abuse.

Previous Story

The owner of a dog that has been named the Ugliest Dog in Greenville wants to enter him in the World's Ugliest Dog contest in California next month.

Holly Chandler says "Peanut" was rescued last July in Washington after he was set on fire as a puppy, severely burned by his previous owners. Those owners were never found and "Peanut" spent nine months recovering.

He won the Greenville contest last month during the 2014 Canine Crawl.

Chandler wants to use the national contest as a platform to bring awareness to animal abuse and the damage that it can cause. "It will not be about winning or losing. It will solely be about telling people his story and showing that we cannot stick our heads in the sand," said Chandler. "Animal abuse happens, it is time to face it and come together to stop it."

Because of the fire, "Peanut" lost his lips so his teeth show, and his eyes don't close because his eyelids were burned.

She said many people have called her dog hideous, and she gets disgusting looks when they are out in public. But Chandler says after lots of love and understanding, "Peanut" is now a happy and healthy dog.

Chandler has set up a fund to raise money to help get "Peanut" to California for the contest. So far they have raised about 1/3 of the money needed for the trip.
