An Eastern Carolina city gets a new distinction as a great retirement destination.
Some may think of Florida or Arizona, but when it comes to lesser known places, USA Today ranks Greenville among the top five places nationwide to retire.
Mayor Allen Thomas says it just makes sense.
"Greenville's a special place for a lot of people. It's a wonderful city," says Thomas. "Great medicine, great healthcare, good people, the university here and the close proximity to the beach and ocean. It's a great place to live"
USA Today says Greenville's mild weather and affordable lifestyle are good for those living their golden years. The city's expansive medical industry with Vidant Medical and the Brody School of Medicine also helped boost Greenville to the top.
This new distinction comes on the heels that Greenville was named among the top 10% of cities nationwide for economic and job growth from Area Development Magazine.
Other cities on USA Today's list include Lincoln, Nebraska; Huntsville, Alabama; Jackson, California, and Gulfport, Florida.
