UNC Students Want Board To Stop Funding Coal Industry

Students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill want the school to divest its endowment from the coal industry, and they want to make that request to the board of trustees.

Campus leaders have scheduled a news conference Thursday during which they will call on the board to allow them to make a presentation at their next meeting.

A statement from the Sierra Student Coalition says 77 percent of the students voting in a referendum on Tuesday backed the idea of divesting the $2.1 billion endowment. The coalition says the push at UNC is part of a movement at more than 200 colleges and universities where leaders are being asked to remove investments in the coal industry from their endowments.
