Troopers say they are still trying to figure out why one driver veered out of her lane Thursday night, hitting another vehicle head-on.
Trooper T.R. Morrison of the Highway Patrol in Carteret County said just after 5 p.m. Thursday, one woman was driving her sport-utility vehicle east on Highway 70 in Smyrna, near Hill Road.
Troopers said a woman driving a red Volvo coming the opposite direction veered out of her lane, hitting the SUV head-on.
Trp. Morrison says both women, whose names have not yet been released, suffered broken bones.
Both women were airlifted to Vidant Medical Center. No word yet on their conditions.
"I estimated speeds at 50 to 55 miles per hour," said Trp. Morrison. "They were taken to the hospital so quickly, there was no time to gather more information to determine the cause... There are still a few unknowns at this time."
Charges against the driver of the Volvo are pending.
