Stolen heavy equipment is now in the hands of authorities, after deputies say a car crash led them to the thieves.
Joshua Carter, 27, and 29-year-old Hakeem Sheppard, both of Kinston, are facing several charges including felony larceny and felony possesion of stolen goods.
Investigators responded to 2960 Grifton Hugo Road in Lenoir County on Saturday to reports of stolen scrap metal.
When detectives arrived, the suspects had not yet committed a crime. Deputies interviewed the men and received information connecting them to earlier thefts, but could not arrest the men at the time.
Deputies were called to a vehicle crash on Sharon Church Road around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
The vehicle was hauling a stolen trailer and forklift.
Carter and Sheppard attempted to flee from the vehicle, but were caught and arrested at the scene.
Carter is charged with conspiracy to commit larceny, two counts of felony larceny and two counts of felony possession of stolen goods and was placed under a $100,000 bond.
Sheppard is charged with conspiracy to commit felony larceny, two counts of felony larceny and two counts of felony possession of stolen goods and was placed under a $50,000 bond.
Both men are being held in the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office Detention Center.
