Two Rescued From Sinking Sailboat Off Cape Lookout

The U.S. Coast Guard says two men were rescued off Cape Lookout Wednesday night.

The Andante II, a 41-foot sailboat, became disabled 25 miles east of Cape Lookout and began taking on water. The crew reported they lost engine power and steering as well.

A rescue helicopter from Elizabeth City located the sailboat and Jim Southward and Pat Schoenberger jumped into the water, away from their boat. That allowed the Coast Guard to avoid the hazard of the sailboat's mast and to safety hoist the two men into the helicopter.

There were no injuries.
