New Bern Police said an accident that ended with a car overturned in bushes along the roadside all began with a blown tire.
New Bern Police said at 6:15PM on Sunday, 17-year-old Keaton Mlay's tire blew out on Glenburnie Road between the Highway 70 ramps and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Police said once the tire blew out, Mlay's vehicle hit the curb near Spunky McDoogle's Restaurant and Pub, and his passenger vehicle flipped. Mlay and his passenger were able to get out of the vehicle, one with the assistance of Fire and Rescue crews and a nearby restaurant worker.
City of New Bern spokeswoman, Colleen Roberts, said Mlay was not wearing a seatbelt, and taken to Vidant Medical Center with facial lacerations and collapsed lung. Mlay's injuries were considered minor. His passenger, who's name has not yet been released, was also transported with minor injuries.
Roberts said although the investigation continues, police suspect that alcohol and/or drugs may be a factor in wreck.
