Two people were killed in a fiery car crash in Bertie County, while the lone survivor is recovering at the hospital in Greenville.
The Highway Patrol says the Dodge Stratus burst into flames after it drove off Highway 13 to the left, hitting a ditch, a utility pole and a tree. The crash happened .2 of a mile south of Powellsville just after 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
Rubiart Vinson, 62, was the driver. Troopers say he was killed, along with 41-year-old Michelle Knight, who was sitting in the backseat behind on the passenger side. Troopers say neither of them were wearing seatbelts.
The passenger in the front seat, 46-year-old Curtis Cofield, survived the crash. He was buckled up, troopers say.
The three are not related but all live in the same apartment building in Ahoskie.
Trooper JV Reid says it's not clear why the car went off the highway to the left. The road was dry at the time of the crash, and there are no brake marks on the highway.
