Troopers: Elderly Man Drives Through Newport Flea Mall Wall Injuring 1

Highway Patrol says that an elderly Carteret County man drove into a flea mall building Saturday morning, striking a person.

Troopers say around 11:15 a.m. at the Newport Flea Mall, 93-year-old Edward Lupton of Beaufort was parking his car when he hit his gas instead of his breaks, and went through the side of the building. We’re told Lupton struck a man and 2 vendor booths before driving through the opposite wall and pushing a utility trailer into two parked vehicles.

The victim, Francisco Dominguez of Newport was taken to Carteret General Hospital for his injuries.

Troopers say that Lupton told them that he doesn’t remember anything about the accident or what led up to it. He was charged with reckless driving. Lupton was taken to the hospital to be checked out.

Officials say that operations went on as normal at the flea mall after everything was cleaned up.
