Charges have been filed against an elderly driver in a motorcycle crash that killed a Cherry Point Marine.
Lou Cacal of Newport was charged this morning by the Highway Patrol with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to yield right of way.
The accident happened around 1:45 p.m. Saturday, east of Newport.
Troopers say the 72-year-old man was crossing Highway 24 from the Fuel Market gas station toward Bogue Pines Mobile Home Park when he struck a motorcycle being driven by David Sandmeyer of Minnesota.
Cacal told troopers that he had waited for a funeral procession to drive by and didn't see Sandmeyer's motorcycle at the end. Troopers do not believe Sandmeyer was part of that procession.
