Troopers: Duplin County 18-Wheeler Accident Kills Driver, Several Hundred Turkeys Being Transported

The North Carolina Highway Patrol says that an 18-wheeler driver is dead, following an accident in Duplin County that saw his turkey hauling truck overturn.

Trooper Curtis Tripp says that it happened around 9:10 p.m. Friday, 7 miles east of Mount Olive. Trooper Tripp says that 43-year-old Jimmy Smith was exceeding a safe driving speed while driving east on Garner Chapel Road near Bethel Church Road. We’re told Smith would die at the scene after his truck would go off the right side of the road and overturn.

Officials say that the truck was believed to have been carrying around 1 thousand turkeys, half of which are said to have died in the wreck. The truck was heading to Butterball according to Trooper Tripp, and was just 3 miles away on Garner Chapel Road when the accident happened.
