Highway Patrol says that one person is dead and a passenger in serious condition following an accident Saturday morning in Pitt County.
Troopers say that it happened around 2:53 a.m. Saturday on Mobleys Bridge Road in Pitt County. Trooper A.B. Smith tells WITN that 51-year-old Johnny Elks of Grimesland was driving east on Mobleys Bridge Road when he went left of center into a sliding motion and ended up veering right into a cement guard rail just east of Foster Road. We’re told when Elks struck the guard rail, it sent his Chevy pickup truck left of center again, off the road and into a tree.
Troopers say that Elks was killed on impact. They are not releasing the name of the passenger because they have not made contact with next of kin. We’re told that passenger was taken Vidant Medical Center in serious condition.
Trooper Smith says he's awaiting a toxicology report from the medical examiners office.
