Trooper: Motorcyclist Lucky To Be Alive After Alcohol Related Crash In Martin County

The Highway Patrol says that a motorcyclist is lucky to be alive after a crash they say involved alcohol.

Troopers say it happened around 4:38 p.m. Sunday. Officials say 35-year-old Rodney Haggard of Winterville was riding north on NC 125 heading into Hamilton when he lost control in front of the Fida Mart on south Front Street. We’re told Haggard went off the road to the right, hit a curb, was thrown from the bike, and then struck a stop sign and a utility pole.

Officials say Haggard was going around 55 mph at the time of the accident and was not wearing a helmet.

Haggard was taken to Martin General Hospital and then airlifted to Vidant Medical Center. The investigating trooper says Haggard is in stable condition and did not believe the injuries to be life-threatening.

Troopers say that Haggard is facing DWI, no license, operating without a helmet, reckless driving, and failure to maintain lane control charges.
