Town Commissioner Charged With Growing Pot, Stealing Candy

A Bridgeton town commissioner is in trouble with the law after police say they found marijuana growing in the man's home.

Police say Charles Freeman was first accused of stealing candy and a soft drink from the Wilco Hess station in the Craven County town. When police went to the man's home they found marijuana plants growing.

The 53-year-old Freeman is charged with manufacturing marijuana, possession of marijuana, maintaining a dwelling for sale/manufacture of marijuana. He is also charged with misdemeanor larceny for the candy and soft drink theft.

Last year, Freeman was pistol whipped during a robbery in December at his hair salon business on D Street. At the time Freeman was also the town's mayor pro tem.

The town commissioner is free on a $1,000 bond.
