This week is National Pollinator Week and a beekeeper in Tarboro wants to bring more awareness about the importance of bees in Eastern Carolina.

Beekeeper Berry Hines Sr. says honeybees pollinate one third of all fruits and vegetables that make it to our dinner table. He says North Carolina is 26% farmland so bees are needed here in our state.

Hines says the bee population is declining at a fast pace and that could create problems in the future.

Hines says, "One of the problems we have had here in Eastern North Carolina is a lot of the feral hives are dying off because of disease and different things like that and when that happens, if they get a disease or a pest in the wild, there is no one to treat them so they are dying."

Hines says there is a need for more beekeepers that maintain hives. Those bees then help farmers in the area maintain their crops.
