Tax Preparer Arrested As Tax Season Begins

As tax season begins, a Rocky Mount tax preparer found herself behind bars today.

Gloria Johnson of Rocky Mount, who owns Johnson's Tax Service on North Winstead Avenue, was charged with 20 counts of aid or assist in the preparation of fraudulent tax returns, two counts of attempt to evade or defeat tax and three counts of false reports to a law enforcement officer.

The state Department of Revenue says the 40-year-old woman helped clients file fraudulent state tax returns for the 2009, 2010 and 2011 tax years. They say Johnson also provided clients with false receipts and documents as well as overstating her business expenses in her own tax returns for 2009 and 2010.

Johnson was jailed in Wake County on a $313,000 secured bond. Her first court appearance is tomorrow in Raleigh.
