Troopers in Lenoir County said part of Highway 258 was shut down for nearly three and a half hours as they got an empty fuel tanker back on the road after it hit a tree.
Trooper W.K. Bennett with the Lenoir County Highway Patrol said an empty fuel tanker swerved to miss a deer on Highway 258 near Jonestown Road around midnight.
As the driver swerved and missed a deer, Tpr. Bennett said the driver did hit a tree.
While the driver was taken to the hospital to be checked out, investigators said he was treated for back pain and released.
According to Tpr. Bennett, it took two large wrecker trucks to pull the tanker back onto the two-lane highway. That meant closing that stretch of Highway 258 for nearly three and a half hours.
The road was reopened by 3:30 a.m. Thursday.
The driver of the truck is facing a charge of failure to maintain lane control.
