TROOPERS: 18-Wheeler Driver May Have Fallen Asleep In Duplin County Fatal Crash

The Highway Patrol says that a tractor trailer driver is dead after a crash Saturday night in Duplin County.

Troopers say it happened around 9:30 p.m. Officials say that 53-year-old Ronnie Carter of Sampson County was traveling west on I-40 about 3 miles west of the town of Warsaw. Officials say that Carter was killed when he ran off the highway to the left into the median and crashed into the bridge overpass support for Charlie Frederick Road.

Troopers say that 67-year-old John Mueller, a passenger in the truck, was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. We’re told as of 7 a.m. Sunday that Mueller was in critical condition.

Troopers say that based on their investigation, it appears that Carter had fallen asleep at the wheel.

There will be no autopsy done due to the severity of the crash, according to troopers.
