TRAFFIC ALERT: Highway 12 Reopens In Dare County

At 9:00 a.m. the Dare County Sheriff's Office reports that Highway 12 in the Mirlo Beach area has reopened.

Deputies say there is a small amount of water still on the highway in places and urge drivers to use extreme caution.

Previous Story

After the overnight rain event that continued into the morning hours for Eastern Carolina, the Department of Transportation deemed part of Highway 12, along the Outer Banks, impassable.

The DOT issued the advisory for the Southern Shores area of Dare County at 5:07AM on Friday and expects the road to be passable again around 11:00AM on Friday.

Dare County Sheriff’s deputies are working checkpoints on NC 12 at Oregon Inlet and at Mirlo Beach. There are reports of approximately 2 feet of water on the roadway in the Mirlo area.

Deputies have let tractor-trailers pass the roadway because of their height.
