WITN's Teacher of the Week for Wednesday, October 9th 2013 is Hugh Whaley from Trexler Middle School in Onslow County.

Whaley is the director of bands and a music teacher. He has been at Trexler, which is in Richlands, since 1991.

Whaley received his Bachelor of Music with honors from ECU in 1986. He then got his Master of Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1991.

Whaley has conducted the Johnstown Youth Symphony and was selected by his colleagues to conduct the North Carolina Bandmaster’s Association Eastern District Middle School Concert band. He is also a performer, playing the French horn on all recordings of the Keystone Winds.

Whaley says what he loves about teaching are the “moments when students achieve a level of musical performance quality, that communicates the emotional intent of the music they are playing. During these moments in time the feeling of connection between the musicians, the music, and the listeners is powerful and usually remains with those who experience it for the rest of their lives.”

The person who nominated him wrote Whaley deserves this honor “for his enthusiasm and for teaching kids to appreciate and have fun with music.”
