Storm Closes Hatteras To Ocracoke Ferry Runs

You can't get from Ocracoke Island to Hatteras, thanks to Thursday's storm.

The D.O.T. says the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry route has been suspended until further notice after extremely high winds last night caused the ferry channel to shoal over and become impassible.

The Ferry Division says it's been in contact with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers who will survey the channel as soon as possible.

In the meantime, an extra run is being added to the ferry to Swan Quarter from Ocracoke starting Saturday. Island residents and vendors carrying necessary goods won't have to pay a toll using either the Swan Quarter or Cedar Island ferries.

The additional run to Swan Quarter will depart Ocracoke at 10:00 a.m. and leave Swan Quarter at 1:00 p.m.
