BIG FISH STORY: State Record Scamp Caught Off Atlantic Beach

A Knightdale man now holds the state record for catching the largest scamp grouper.

The Division of Marine Fisheries recently certified the September 25th catch off Atlantic Beach.

Toby Grantham caught the 27.6-pound fish while on the vessel "Continental Shelf" during a 48-hour fishing trip. The big fish was 40 inches long and had a 26.25-inch girth.

Previously, North Carolina had not certified a state record scamp. The world record scamp was caught off the coast of Alabama in 2000 and came in at 29 pounds, 10 ounces.
