Democrats responded to McCrory's state of the state address by saying any tax reform must pass a simple fairness test.

"Gov. McCrory's plan would expand the sales tax to include more services like haircuts, home maintenance and doctors' visits while cutting income taxes for the wealthiest individuals and big corporations. This means that hardworking taxpayers will have to pay more in taxes overall, while millionaires and big corporations pay less," said Larry Hall, (D) State House Minority Leader.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Republican Gov. Pat McCrory says his new administration will focus on the economy, education and the efficiency of state government services.

McCrory made the comments Monday night during his first State of the State address to a joint session of the General Assembly in Raleigh.

The former Charlotte mayor also said North Carolina is no longer going to take federal money without knowing how to pay back. He was referring to the $2.5 billion the state owes the federal government for unemployment benefits. McCrory said he would seek legislation to allow school districts use more lottery revenues for technology and virtual learning.
