The pilot of a small plane is dead after it crashed this morning in Halifax County.

Sheriff Wes Tripp says the pilot was the only person on board when it crashed off Andrew Hale Road outside of Littleton.

The Federal Aviation Administration tells WITN News that the Cessna 182 pilot reported engine problems. The plane had been diverted to the Halifax-Northampton Regional Airport and crashed in a field, some five miles southwest of the airport around 10:00 a.m. It landed upside down in the field.

The Cessna left the Sabot Airport in Manakin Sabot, Virgina this morning and was headed to Rocky Mount, according to the Halifax County airport.

The plane is owned by Poe Incorporated of Manakin Sabot.

FAA investigators from Greensboro are now headed to the crash site.
