A winter weather advisory has been issued for all of eastern Carolina except Carteret, Onslow, and Duplin counties from 6pm Thursday through 4am Friday. Light freezing rain and sleet will be possible.
Crews worked through some rain Friday morning to repair a sinkhole that spanned the width of a two-lane road.
The Highway Patrol said Lee Road in Williamston, near Sweet Home Road, had a sinkhole open up around 8 p.m. Thursday night.
Crews filled the hole with rocks on Friday, and the road was allowed to reopen by the afternoon.
Workers told WITN it is likely that a pipe leak under the roadway caused enough erosion under the asphalt to trigger the cave-in.
Troopers said the sinkhole appeared about 2 feet across, 3 feet deep, yet it spanned the entire width of the 2-lane road.
The Highway Patrol says a road in Martin County collapsed due to a sinkhole. Department of Transportation crews responded about 8:00 pm Thursday and are working to fix the gap on Lee Road near Sweet Home Road in Williamston overnight. Troopers say the sinkhole is about 2 feet across, 3 feet deep, and spans the entire width of the 2-lane road. The DOT says the road is expected to reopen by 4:00 pm Friday, but rain could delay the repair.
