Sheriffs Target Action On Video Sweepstakes Ban

North Carolina's sheriffs may start enforcing a state law outlawing video sweepstakes operations next month.

The North Carolina Sheriffs' Association on Monday told the state's 100 county law enforcement officers that standard guidelines mean that the law can be enforced beginning on Jan. 3.

The state Supreme Court on Friday ruled in two cases in which amusement machine and other companies sought to overturn a 2010 law banning sweepstakes machines as a form of gambling. The high court said the law was a constitutional effort to close a loophole since the state outlawed video poker machines in 2007.

Sweepstakes operators and their attorneys say they're confident they can make changes in the games so that they can stay in business.
