Sheriff Credits Homeowner, Deputies For Catching Suspected Burglar

A sheriff credits the homeowner quickly calling 911 and responding deputies in helping to catch a suspected burglar overnight in Lenoir County.

Sheriff Chris Hill says just before 1:00 a.m. Leon Brown drove up to find two people running from his Opal Lane home. The front door to the home had been kicked in.

Deputies immediately saturated the area around Green Acres Mobile Home Park, with Major Ryan Dawson spotting one man walking in the park.

Hill says Chandler Smith eventually confessed to the break-in, while his vehicle was found parked a few blocks from the victim's home. Inside deputies say they found items taken during the crime.

The sheriff says the home was ransacked, with DVD players, a rifle and ammunition, along with other items taken.

Hill says they have strong leads on the second suspect and anticipate an arrest within the next few days.

The 18-year-old Smith is jailed on a $251,000 bond.
