The Highway 17 Bypass in Beaufort County has reopened after a bad accident Thursday afternoon closed down the highway for more than two hours.
The crash, involving an 18-wheeler dump truck and two passenger vehicles, happened around 12:15 p.m.
The Highway Patrol says the accident happened on the bridge between Washington and Chocowinity.
Troopers say a woman had a flat on the bridge, and stopped her vehicle. A man with a two year old child passenger stopped to help her.
The bridge does not have an emergency lane.
Troopers say the two had changed the flat and had gotten back into their vehicles when the 18-wheeler hit the back of the man's car, which then struck the woman's car.
Debris from the crash ended up in the southbound lanes, which were also closed.
The two drivers and the child were not seriously injured, but were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Troopers say they anticipate filing charges against the truck driver.
