Scientists have announced the discovery of a new planet that is very similar to earth.

The accompanying picture is an artist drawing.

The new planet called Kepler-22B is sitting outside our solar system in what appears to be an ideal place for life.

Scientists say the surface temperature is near 72 degrees and it could possibly have liquid water on its surface, which is essential for life.

Follow up studies are now underway to determine if the planet is solid like earth or more gaseous like Neptune.

Kepler-22B is approximately 600 light years away.

The planet was discovered by the Kepler telescope which was launched in 2009 on a planet- hunting mission.
