More than a dozen local schools closed early Wednesday as the threat of severe weather lingered in the area.
Greene County was the first to announce the early departure, and soon after Pitt County followed suit.
Dozens of parents arrived early to pick up their kids at E.B. Aycock Middle School in Greenville. It was a similar situation at West Greene Elementary in Snow Hill.
Greene County Superintendent Patrick Miller said an incident in 2011 was a big factor in their decision. Miller recalled a tornado that ripped through homes and businesses in Snow Hill, which also affected Greene County Middle School.
"I do not want to have students in a building that is directly impacted by a tornado," Miller told WITN on Wednesday.
Most parents told WITN they support the early school closing. Many said better safe than sorry.
Wilson County schools never opened Wednesday, due to several flooded roads and the potential for severe weather.
Many schools in Eastern Carolina sent students and staff home early Wednesday because of the severe weather threat.
Bear Grass Charter School in Martin County is dismissing at 11:30 a.m.
Beaufort County Schools dismissing at two hours early.
Bertie County Schools are dismissing students at 1:00 p.m.
Craven County Schools dismissing at 2:00 p.m.
Duplin County Schools are dismissing at 2:00pm. There will be no after school activities.
Edgecombe County Schools are releasing three hours early.
Edenton/Chowan Schools closing at 2:30 p.m.
Emmanuel Christian School closing at 12:50 p.m.
Greene County Schools will dismiss at 12 p.m.
Lawrence Academy will dismiss at 1:30pm.
Lenoir County Schools will dismiss at 12:30 p.m.
Martin County Schools are closing at 1:00 p.m.
North East Carolina Prep School in Tarboro is dismissing at 12:45 p.m.
Pamlico County School dismissing at 2:00 p.m.
Perquimans County Schools have a 2:30 dismissal, no after school events.
Pitt County Schools are dismissing 90 minutes early.
Tyrrell County Schools are dismissing at 1:00pm today.
Washington County Schools are closing at noon.
Washington Montessori Charter School will dismiss at 1:00pm. No after school activities will take place.
Wayne County Schools are dismissing two hours early.
