Scam Alert: What To Do If Caller Threatens To Turn Off Utilities

If a caller threatened to turn off your electricity unless you paid up, what would you do? Here's some advice from the North Carolina Attorney General

A new scam is making the rounds with callers claiming to be from your utility company, saying your account has a problem, and you need to pay up, or get the lights shut off. Your caller id might even say the power company's name on it.

In one example, scam artists ask people to buy a prepaid credit card for a certain amount, then call back with the card number and pin. Some people have lost up to 900 dollars to this scam.

The Attorney General says if you get a call like this, hang up. Look up the number to your utility company on your bill and check with them to see if there is a problem with your account.
