OFFICIALS: 75-Year-Old Wayne County Woman Defends Her Home From Burglar


A man is behind bars after investigators say a 75-year-old woman held her ground when he broke into her home.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office says that 32-year-old Joseph Newsome broke into a home at 1001 West New Hope Road in Goldsboro.

Officials say that the 75-year-old homeowner successfully defended her home and that Newsome ran from the scene before law enforcement arrived.

Investigators say they were given a full description of Newsome and his vehicle by the homeowner, and that he was later apprehended by law enforcement.

Newsome has been charged with 1st degree burglary, 2 counts of breaking and entering and larceny, 2 counts of unauthorized uses of motor vehicle, 2 counts of misdemeanor larceny, and 1 count of uttering forged instrument.

Newsome is being held on a $164,000 secured bond.
