Authorities say a Camp Lejeune Marine apparently killed himself while playing with a gun last month.
The Marine Corps says Lance Corporal LaNija Gilpatrick died last Wednesday at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown says the 22-year-old from Johnstown, Pennsylvania was with friends at his home on Dalton Court outside of Richlands July 26th. The sheriff says Gilpatrick looked into the barrel of the 9 mm gun and shot himself in the eye.
Brown says the Marine had an operation and was doing well for two days, but then took a turn for the worse and died.
The military says the death remains under investigation.
Gilpatrick, who joined the Marines after graduating high school in 2010, will be laid to rest today in Pennsylvania.
