The state auditor wants local, state and federal authorities to investigate Princeville after an audit of the Edgecombe County town's books.
This as the State Bureau of Investigation confirms that it has opened an investigation into state funded construction projects in the town. An SBI spokeswoman told WITN that their case was opened at the request of the Edgecombe County district attorney.
The audit, which was released this morning, says Mayor Priscilla Everette-Oates and a town employee used town credit cards for thousands of dollars in questionable expenditures. It also says the mayor, a town commissioner and the interim town manager received $4,112 in travel expense reimbursements without adequate supporting documents.
State auditors began looking into Princeville's books last summer after the North Carolina Local Government Commission took over the town's finances.
